Boise Hoarder Cleanout: What Turns Up Buried in the Pile

Pulled a shoebox out from under a bed in Nampa a few weeks back, second day of a hoarder cleanout. Inside was a savings bond from 1978, a rosary, and about forty dollars in worn-out fives. The daughter had already waved at that room and told me to just take it all.

That's the part nobody warns you about. Hauling is the easy half. Sorting is what decides how the day actually goes.

Most junk removal doesn't take much thinking. A deck is a deck. A hot tub is a hot tub, and it's going in the trailer either way.

Hoarded rooms are different. They're layered like sediment. Junk mail from last spring sits on a photo album from the nineties, which sits on a quilt somebody's grandmother made, which sits on carpet nobody's seen in fifteen years.

So every armload is a small decision. Trash, donate, recycle, or stop and hand it to the family? Get that wrong a few dozen times and something that mattered is gone.

I'd rather move slow and be right. Costs a little more in time. Beats the phone call where somebody remembers the ring was in the sock drawer.

Where the good stuff hides

People who save everything usually don't trust banks much either. I've found cash tucked into books, folded inside greeting card envelopes, and rolled up in a coffee can behind a shelf of paint. One roll was taped flat to the bottom of a dresser drawer.

Paperwork is the bigger deal, honestly. Vehicle titles, deeds, insurance policies and old tax returns end up in grocery sacks and cereal boxes far more often than in a filing cabinet. If the person passed away and the family is settling an estate, those pages are worth more than everything else in the house put together.

Jewelry turns up in pill bottles and sewing tins. Coins? Jars, drawers, and the pockets of coats nobody's worn since the Boise Bench looked different.

Then there's the stuff I flat out stop for. Firearms, ammunition, prescription bottles, anything that looks like a legal document. I leave all of it on a table for the family to decide.

Tip: Get a box of gallon zip bags and a marker before day one. When you hit paper, don't stand there reading it. Bag it, write the room on the bag, and deal with it later at a kitchen table.

A normal junk haul prices out on volume. A hoarder cleanout prices out on volume plus hours, and the hours are the wild card.

One bedroom or a packed spare room usually lands somewhere in the few-hundred range. A full house with layered rooms, a stuffed garage and a shed out back gets into the low thousands pretty quick, especially when it takes several trailer loads to the transfer station.

What pushes it up? Narrow paths, stairs, heavy furniture buried under lighter stuff, and any room where I have to check every container before it goes in the trailer.

Family doing a first pass is what brings it back down. If somebody who knew the person walks the house and pulls the keepsakes, the paperwork and anything with real value, I can move a lot faster. You're paying me to haul, not to guess what your dad cared about.

Here's the honest version: yes, I'd love the whole job. But if you and your brother can knock out the small valuables on a Saturday, do that first. You'll save real money and sleep better.

Where it all ends up

Usable furniture, clothes, dishes and household goods go to donation. Idaho Youth Ranch and St. Vincent de Paul take a lot of it, and I'd rather make that stop than pay to bury something a family in Caldwell would put to use.

Metal and appliances get recycled, including the stuff people assume is worthless. A bent bed frame counts. So does a dead window AC unit.

The rest rides to Hidden Hollow or the Ada County landfill, depending on the load and the day. On a big job in Meridian or out toward Star, that's several runs, and it's a bigger chunk of your bill than most people expect.

One thing about timing. Summer here gets brutal, and a closed-up house packed with old paper and food containers is worse inside than out on the driveway. Spring or fall makes the whole thing easier on everybody, if you have any say in when it happens.

Bottom line

A hoarder cleanout is a sorting project with hauling attached, not the other way around. Get the paperwork and the keepsakes out first, leave the firearms and pills for the family, and let somebody else deal with the volume.
