Star's growing fast — it was the fastest-growing city in Idaho in 2025 — and that shows up in the junk removal calls. A lot of it comes from newer subdivisions like Heron River, Star River Estates, Movado Estates, Skybreak, and Star River Ranch, where most homes went up in the last 10 to 15 years on smaller lots. Star Sits on a County Line — Here's Why That Matters for Junk Removal
Star is mostly Ada County, but city limits reach into Canyon County too. That matters more than people think, because the Ada County Landfill — locals call the area Hidden Hollow, off Seamans Gulch Road in the North Boise foothills — won't take waste that didn't originate in Ada County. If you're on the Canyon County side and hauling it yourself, that's worth checking before you load up. The Meridian Transfer Station is the closer option for a lot of Star addresses anyway, and it'll take large metal items for free.
Permits matter here too. Tearing out a shed, deck, or hot tub? The Star Building Department issues demolition permits, and you'll want one before work starts. Setting a dumpster in the street or sidewalk on the Ada County side needs a temporary right-of-way permit from ACHD — the Canyon County side isn't as clear-cut, so ask before you block the curb.

Does it matter that part of Star is in Canyon County when I'm getting rid of junk?+
It can. The Ada County Landfill won't accept waste that didn't come from Ada County, so if your address is on the Canyon County side, that's worth checking before you haul anything there yourself. A junk removal service that already knows the rules sidesteps the issue for you.
Do I need a permit to have a dumpster dropped on my street?+
If it's going to sit in the street or on the sidewalk anywhere in the Ada County portion of Star, yes — ACHD requires a temporary right-of-way permit. In a driveway, you're fine.
What happens to an old shed or deck once it's torn down?+
The debris still has to go somewhere, and treated or painted wood can't go into yard-waste diversion — it gets handled as regular demolition debris instead. You'll also want a demolition permit from the Star Building Department before work starts.
Can I just burn my yard debris instead of hauling it off?+
Only on days the Middleton-Star Fire District's daily burn assessment allows it, generally when air quality and weather cooperate, and never with garbage, lumber, treated wood, or construction debris mixed in.
