Garage Cleanouts

How Long Does a Garage Cleanout Take? A Boise Hauler's Answer

How long a garage cleanout takes in Boise depends on what's in there and how fast you decide. Here's what speeds it up, what slows it down, and what to expect.

Half-cleared garage in Eagle, Idaho with a few boxes by the open door and empty metal shelving during a garage cleanout

Most of the garage cleanout photos people text me come with the same first question. It isn't about price. It's "How long is this going to take?"

Fair question. You've got a life, maybe a closing date, maybe a spouse who wants the car back inside before the first frost. So here's an honest answer for Boise and the Treasure Valley, plus which part of it is really in your hands.

So how long does a garage cleanout take?

The hauling part goes faster than most people expect.

A one-car garage with mostly boxes, old bikes and some broken shelving tends to load quickly. A packed two- or three-car garage takes longer, mostly because there's simply more to carry. You see a lot of those in Meridian and Star, where the house is newer but the stuff came along from the last three houses.

The real variable is trailer loads. If everything fits in one, I load it, haul it and I'm done. If it takes two, I run the first load to Hidden Hollow or a recycler, unload and come back, and that round trip adds up if you're out in Nampa or Caldwell.

So when I give you a time estimate off your photos, I'm really estimating volume. It's the same reason I can usually price a job from a picture.

What slows things down

Some garages look small and take longer. Others look like a disaster and go quick.

Loose stuff takes longer than boxed stuff. Thirty sealed boxes move fast. Thirty years of coffee cans full of screws and a pegboard of tools that all come down one at a time? Not hard, just slower.

Heavy items need their own trip. An old chest freezer, a workbench somebody built out of 4x6s, a treadmill that's been a coat rack for years. Each one is its own careful walk to the trailer.

Some things I can't haul. Old paint, motor oil, pesticides, half-empty propane tanks. Every garage on the Boise Bench and in the North End seems to have a shelf of it, so I set it aside for you to take to the county's household hazardous waste drop-off.

Donations get split out. If something's in decent shape, I'd rather it go to Idaho Youth Ranch or St. Vincent de Paul than the landfill. Sorting as I go adds a little time, and I think it's worth it.

The slowest part is usually you

I say this with love.

The lifting is quick. What takes time is when I pick up a box and you say, "Hang on, let me look in that one." Then you find your kid's old baseball cards, and we're a good while into one box.

That's fine. It's your stuff, and some of it matters. But if you're watching the clock, decide what's staying before I show up, and the job turns into lifting and loading.

Heads up: If the garage cleanout is for a home sale or a move-out deadline, don't book it for the morning of. Give yourself a day or two of cushion, because something always turns up that you'll want to deal with before the house changes hands.

The DIY version, honestly

Yes, I'd love your business. But plenty of folks can do this themselves, and you should know what you're signing up for.

A DIY garage cleanout usually takes longer than people plan for, depending on how much is in there and how many hands you've got. Day one is sorting and loading.

Then come the dump runs. If you're borrowing a buddy's truck or renting a trailer, that's probably several trips, and Saturday at the landfill isn't quick.

After that there's the donation drop-off, the scrap metal you meant to take in, and the paint cans still sitting by the door three weeks later.

And in July, when it's pushing triple digits out here, a garage turns into an oven by noon. That alone slows people down.

None of that means you shouldn't do it. It just means "I'll knock it out Saturday" tends to become two Saturdays and a sore back.

Garage cleanout timing in the Treasure Valley

Spring and early fall are the busy stretches. Everybody wants the garage back before summer projects or before the snow, so if you've got a date in mind, text me early.

Most jobs get done within about 48 hours of you sending photos. You usually don't have to stand there the whole time, either. Once I know what stays and what goes, plenty of people point at the pile and head off to work.

If you're up in the Eagle foothills or at the top of a steep driveway, that's usually fine. Just mention it so I show up with the right setup.

Bottom line

The hauling on most garage cleanouts goes faster than people expect. What eats time is extra trailer loads, loose small stuff, the hazardous leftovers and second-guessing what to keep.
